The Mummies - Play Their Own Records!

The Mummies were the ultimate lo-fi garage punk noise act, partially a nutty monster novelty group but also the best band playing in the style, hands down.  There's a lot more than just caveman rock here too: surf, bluesy vamps, biker anthems, spooky haunted house themes, instructional dance numbers, and frat rock classics, all smashed up into one glorious fucked up mess.  This first LP is only the beginning of a long stretch of classic material, but it's as good a place to start as any.

Mummies vs. Wolfmen

Another one from the crypts, today, intrepid explorers! This seven inch record contains two songs each from Swamp favorites The Mummies and their like-minded brethren The Wolfmen.

Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires

Take a long, careful look at that cover: dub wizard Scientist and his monster-hunter crew tooling through the Swamp, blasting strange reggae music from his speakerboat to the horror and confusion of the array of classic Universal monsters that lurk there, doing who knows what. Present on this album are a morbid gallery of musical Frankenstein's monsters, thematically concerned primarily with vampires, mummies, and zombies, with occasional nods to other archetypes. Dub, like much music created on the fringes of cryptic subculture, is nigh-impossible to accurately describe, and similarly daunting to listen to for the uninitiated. Much of it is the aimless noodling of fried-minded headcases, but at its pinnacle it is transcendentally weird and can wreak permanent mental change upon the unsuspecting. If the stars are right, mayhaps this can happen to you.

The Mummies - Tales From the Crypt

I probably haven't posted enough Mummies records yet, considering the massive back-catalog they have out of print, so here's a festive little one for you. Recorded for Sympathy for the Record Industry at some point in the 90's, this album was rejected by the Mummies as sounding too good, and never officially released. Fortunately many anonymous bootleg editions appeared in record stores immediately afterwards, properly tinny and warped. My original copy of this was on vinyl so thin that it was translucent in daylight and peeled off in slivers from the pressure of the stylus. In keeping with that downward momentum, here's some shitty mp3s and a jpeg.
You're so full of shit your eyes are brown.

(You Must Fight To Live) On The Planet Of The Apes

Lurching forth from their sarcophagi, The Mummies, clad in the moldering rags of ancient finery, spin a tale of madness: Mankind has been conquered and enslaved by filthy apes, reduced to dumb servility. One lone man stands against an army of soldier apes on horseback, his fist raised in defiance, and cries:
"No!"
